Bangladesh is one of the world’s poor countries. The country has a long cultural and religious tradition of looking after the elderly and it is expected that families will care for their elderly members. But, rapid socio-economic and demographic transitions, mass poverty, changing social & religious values, influence of western culture and other factors have broken down the traditional extended family and community care system.

Poverty is deep and widespread among older men and women which is exacerbated by extreme weather, such as heat waves, floods and cyclones that kills thousands every year, destroy homes and wreck older people livelihoods. As a result elderly people here suffer from basic human problems, such as poor financial support, senile diseases, poor health facilities, negligence and socio economic insecurity.

The Government of Bangladesh introduced old age allowances in the fiscal year 1997_1998 and other healthcare facilities for elderly. But it is not enough to cover the whole elderly people of Bangladesh. Number of beneficiary is very low (4.4 million) compared to total population and the amount of money per head per month is negligible (tk500).

Development goal cannot be achieved leaving anyone behind, so empowering senior citizens is as important as ensuring their welfare. Our elders are an integral part of the society. Let’s not ignore or neglect them. They have a right to live life to the fullest. It’s time for the society to give back to them. So start donating now for this special cause.
